LUMP- SUM PAYMENTS, STOPPING INFLATION, CUTTING TAXES SHOWS THAT REAGON'S POLICIES FIT HIS 'BRAND' OF CONSERVATISM AS HE DESCRIBED IT IN HIS INAUGURAL SPEECH, JANUARY 1981.

Lump-sum payments showed that Reagan's policies fit his brand of conservatism. Ronald Reagan instituted a system call block grants. This system allowed the states to receive lump-sum payments and to us it as they wish in paying for social programs (History Alive!). "It gave the states flexibility to "allocate resources to suit their needs"(History Alive!). Reagan "went a step further by handing responsibility for many programs in health, education, and welfare to the states themselves." (History Alive!) Therefore, unnecessary social spending was cut and taxes were lowered for upper and middle class.

üBy lowering taxes, Reagan also stopped inflation during his presidency which fits his brand of conservatism. Even though at the beginning of his years, 1981 to 1982, economy dipped deeper into recession. However, with Reagan's encouragement Federal Reserve chairman Paul Volcker restricted the money supply. In his State of the Union messages it said "When celebrating triumphs—whether over inflation, interest rates, unemployment, or communism—Reagan used “weor “together.” " (Schweikart) Reagan succeeded, the inflation rate dropped from 12 percent to 4 percent in only a few years (Schweikart).

Moreover, Reagan's economic plan of cutting taxes was another promise he kept. In August 1981, Reagan signed a bill that cut federal taxes by 25 percent over a three-year period (History Alive!). Before he was voted for persident, Reagan ran on three simple promises, and one of them is " he would revive the economy through tax cuts and deregulation, cutting the size of government" and again he kept his promise. " (Schweikart)The Economic Recovery Act helped America's economy rapidly, "Lower capital gains rates caused investors to pump money into the economy as never before" (Schweikart). Moreover it allowed the economy to trickle down and "the gross national product grew by 7.1 percent...The recovery created 18.4 million new jobs" (History Alive!).

FEMINIST, CONSERVATIVES, AND MEN WHO SUPPORT NO-FAULT DIVORCE ARE TO BLAME FOR AMERICAN TREND TOWARDS HIGH DIVORCE RATES STARTING IN THE 1970S.

Feminist should be blame for America's trend toward high divorce rates, starting in the 1970s because they are eager for changes. Women began to bring in ideas such as "Women doing housework were people outside the modern economic system, therefore they were like serfs or peasants." (Zinn) which encouraged themselves to pursue for jobs and not live "through her husband, through her children," (Zinn). This caused laws like no-faults divorce to form and increase the divorce rate in America.

Conservatives should also be blamed because they wanted society to stay the same, which means man have a higher stand than woman. For example, man was expected to work, and woman was always expected to " made the beds, shopped for groceries, matched slip-cover material, ate peanut butter sandwiches with her children, chauffeured Cub Scouts and Brownies" (Zinn) this was a stereo-type that the society created together, therefore it leads to woman wanting "change" which drives the divorce rates.

On the other hand, men who supported the no-fault divorce should also be blame for America's trend towards high divorce rate because by supporting they made divorce easy. Man started the "Jennifer fever". This means that old man were panicking with their middle age crisis, they started to find their wife no longer fulfilling, and desires younger woman. As stated in Schweikart's writing, younger women "they now became prey for the middle-aged wealthy men with "Jennifer Fever."...younger men may have seemed to sociologists to be a logical match, but in fact the two groups were biologically and culturally incompatible." This drives the divorce rate and leaving the society with marriage gap in the late 20th century.

Popular TV shows from the 1970s show that feminists were living in a society that was already changing and did not need changes in divorce law. For example in All In The Family, the daughter of a working class man says " No daddy I'm the one that is applying for a job...A job! you just said yourself how though it is to make ends meet." In the younger generation, society is already changing. Young women are starting to apply for jobs. Therefore, enforcing laws like no-fault divorce to gain women rights was not needed.

Mr. Hilly, I know!!! I was listening in classs, I was suppose to publish this as 4.4 instead of the previous post. I did that on 5/3, and I was going to fix it today by publishing this. Sorry for the confusion!

Doc. C

Questions for understanding:
1) Sam Dash hopes to discover that the money for the "fond" are actually used to commit the crime against them (Watergate).

*2) Mr. Dash makes Mr. Kalmbach recount his trip from the West Coast to Washington, DC so that he can match up the timing with other hearings.

Questions for exam prat ice:
3) The message of Doc. C is that Nixon was setting up "fonds" to cover up the trace of the money for his crime.

*4) The significant of $50,000-$100,000 will be that it is the amount of money Nixon took to "fond" his crime.

*5) The value of this passage on "whether men working for President Nixon broke the law or not" will be that it is a primary source from Herbert Kalmback (Nixon's personal attorney & advisor) and it can be used to compare with other evidence that are found to be correct.

6) The value will be base on the "origin"

DOC. F

Questions for understanding:
1) He hope to discover that the "seamy" things Mr. Hunt done was actually involved in Nixon's crime.

2) To let him admit that he had been involved in the crime and the "seamy" things he had done for the White House was part of the crime.

Questions for exam practice:
1) The message of Doc. F is that Mr. Hunt is being investigated by the House of Judiciary Committee and admit that he had done some "seamy" things for the "White House" (which basically is the other word for President Nixon) and was also planning on other alternatives if the commitment were not met.

2) The significant of the word "package" is that the package is the dirty money Nixon is getting to pay for the crime.

3) The significant of "You only have a certain number of days to get your affairs in order." is that it shows Nixon is committing something that he wants nobody to know and wants it to be done quickly. It also shows that he wants the trace of evidence to be erased afterwards.

Historian 1:

Although most Victorians (men, women, and children) worked long and hard jobs that required physical labor but there were “laws to regulate hours, wages, safety, job security, and working conditions.” (Sally 41) Laws against trade union was developed and “allowed labor to make some significant improvements, especially in working hours and wages.” (Sally 41) Workers had Sunday off and “short Saturday” in which workers are dismissed during mid-afternoon.

Historian 2:

The fast-developing conditions of the 19th century increased the opportunities for “men on the make”. Employers make their workers work under harsh conditions, “to indulge in such abuses as payment of wages” and “exploit cruelly” (Kitson Clark 91). The author described the relationship between employer and employee as “the small master and the man who worked at his elbow.” (Kitson Clark 91)

“How real was the threat of Communist spies within the USA?”

P1: Communist spies threat are real in the US when their actions are proven active with evidence.

P2: The US government (HUAC) is often using McCarthyism; which is the “practice of publicly accusing someone of subversive activities without evidence to back up the charges.”

  • Therefore, communist spies are not real in the United States

"Is it fair to say that the anxiety caused in the US due to nuclear threat, was useful and 'healthy?' (Security of the nation . . . = its health).

P1: It is fair to say anxiety due to nuclear threat is useful and healthy in the US when the government let their citizens feel secure.

P2: The Duck-and-Cover drills for children and the Defense shelters made people believe that the government has ways to protect them from massive destruction (Atomic Bomb).

  • Therefore, is it fair to say that anxiety due to nuclear threat is useful and healthy.

What arguments could be made FOR and AGAINST this statment: "America's poor, in the mid 20th century, were mostly responsible for their own problems."

FOR:

There were no suitable environment and opportunities for the elderly and disabled to work, therefore they can't help being poor.

Working Poor- Poor people worked, but wages were too low to lift them out of poverty

Poverty line was developed much later. This means that people in poverty did not recieve any care until late 1900s. Public were unaware of the situation, and no one was trying to help until they realized poverty became a massive problem.

Also, because the economy is on it's turning point and flourhing the government did not give much care to the people who are suffering from poverty.

Against:

Misfortune, when the poor move into the urban areas looking for manufacturing jobs; opportunies relocated into the suburban areas.

Large immigration; different race; therefore creates racism. Although the government encouraged people living below poverty line to move into the city but they were having difficulties adaptating to the environment and conditions. This increased poverty rate.

Q for 40.2: "How real was the threat of Communist spies within the USA?"

The threat of Communist spies within the USA was not very real because there was no solid evidence. For example, McCarthyism, it is the “practice of publicly accusing someone of subversive activities without evidence to back up the charges. As the passage mentioned, this happens often; the government (HUAC) found communist spies within the United State, but had no confirmed information about them.

On the other hand, it is quit real due to the Rosenberg Trail. Two spies for the USSR were sentenced to death. Julius Rosenberg was charged with passing atomic secrets to the Soviet. Even though there were a lot of protests, he was still executed. He became the first death of spying during Cold War.

Q for 40.3: "Is it fair to say that the anxiety caused in the US due to nuclear threat, was useful and 'healthy?' (Security of the nation . . . = its health).

It is fair to say that the anxiety caused in the US was healthy because it made people believe that their government has ways to protect them from massive destruction (Atomic Bomb). For example, the duck-and-cover drills for children and the defense shelters.

Moreover, atomic power was uprising. There were atomic-powered cars, ships, airplanes, and power plants. This provokes the economy. People were making a lot of money from this new energy or “title”.

Sem2.HW4

"How does the CIA's activities in Iran show that the US behaves undemocratically in its foreign policy?"

CIA’s activities in Iran show that the United States behaves undemocratically in its foreign policy by being crafty in their operations. CIA set up propaganda campaign to control Iran’s press and public and they also sent out fear to eliminate Mohammed Mossadeq’s supporters. A democratic leader will not interfere with people’s opinion, not to mention spreading propaganda all across Iran.

Another example that shows US behave undemocratically is Roosevelt commissioned a royal decree dismissing Mossadeq and made General Zahedi the prime minister. Even though this operation did not turn out the way US wanted it because supporters for Mossadeq revolt, but it is very undemocratic for US to overthrow a country’s prime minister without the process of voting and selection.

Sem2.HW3

1. "How convincing was America's attempts to influence other parts of the world to side with them in the Cold War?"

America was quit convincing by using words and persuasion as weapons to influence other parts of the world to side with them in Cold War. They created United States Information Agency (USIA) in 1953 designed propaganda and used media to spread them across different parts of the world. There are three main networks: Voice of America, Radio Free Europe, Radio Liberty. The U.S. was able to broadcast in different languages in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. It was successful because it cast fear on citizens, and people were trying to escape. The USSR had to isolate their citizens from listening to the news.

2."How wise were America's decisions to produce advanced weapons during the Cold War's first 20 years?"

The U.S. decision to produce advanced weapons was not a wise one. Since the U.S. began to produce the H-Bomb, it became a trend. After the U.S. tested its bomb in 1952, the Soviet started to create its own. The Hydrogen bombs was 500 times stronger than the atomic bombs. Moreover, the United State developed nuclear missiles submarines that can carried up to 16 nuclear missiles underwater. Not for long, the Soviet followed and created their own.

The creation of Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) made every nation in a state of anxiety. MAD meant that “either side would respond to a nuclear attack by launching its own missiles, with devastating results for both sides.” Because of the U.S. determination to keep producing stronger weapons, it puts the world in danger.

The founding of North Alantic Treaty Organization (NATO) helped weaker nations (for example, West Germany and Hungary) to form a collective security and standing army to prevent communist party from taking over. In the organization of NATO, U.S. took the role to provide money, troops, and leadership. What the United States did to try to contain the spread of communism was unjustified because they failed to accomplish their promises. When the Soviet leaders moved quickly eliminating thousands of hungarian protesters, many relied on America's bid to support, but America failed to rescue. They could not take the risk of going to war with the Soviet Union to help one of its satellites.

U.S.'s decision to support the Nationlist in China was a justified decision because it benefits America position for the Cold War. Also knowing Mao and Stalin have simillar policies, it is necessary to not support China's communist party. Cutting off trades with China help gained more trust between citizens in United State and its own government.

If Soviet Union Hegamony did not happen it could have prevented the cold war. If Soviet Union did not set up Soviet-controlled governments around Eastern Europe and promoted communism by force, the United State would have felt less violated. Moreover, U.S. began to think that the Soviet Union was trying to dominate the world.

The Truman Doctrine was a policy outlining the aid Greece and Turkey would recieve from the U.S. to resist communism. Truman wanted to stop the spread of communism. On the other hand, the Soviets thought that the United State destroying communism was threatening Soviet's security. Without the agreement of the doctirne it could have prevented the cold war because the Soviet Union would feel less about United State's opposition of their government

Outside Source: Howard Zinn

If the United States did not suspect Soviet Union as a threat at the very beginning, it could have prevented the cold war. Because the U.S. built a "climat of fear" which is "a hysteria about communism", people fear that Soviet Union will take advantage of their very positive recovery after the war.
