The threat of Communist spies within the USA was not very real because there was no solid evidence. For example, McCarthyism, it is the “practice of publicly accusing someone of subversive activities without evidence to back up the charges. As the passage mentioned, this happens often; the government (HUAC) found communist spies within the United State, but had no confirmed information about them.
On the other hand, it is quit real due to the Rosenberg Trail. Two spies for the USSR were sentenced to death. Julius Rosenberg was charged with passing atomic secrets to the Soviet. Even though there were a lot of protests, he was still executed. He became the first death of spying during Cold War.
Q for 40.3: "Is it fair to say that the anxiety caused in the US due to nuclear threat, was useful and 'healthy?' (Security of the nation . . . = its health).
It is fair to say that the anxiety caused in the US was healthy because it made people believe that their government has ways to protect them from massive destruction (Atomic Bomb). For example, the duck-and-cover drills for children and the defense shelters.
Moreover, atomic power was uprising. There were atomic-powered cars, ships, airplanes, and power plants. This provokes the economy. People were making a lot of money from this new energy or “title”.
