“How real was the threat of Communist spies within the USA?”

P1: Communist spies threat are real in the US when their actions are proven active with evidence.

P2: The US government (HUAC) is often using McCarthyism; which is the “practice of publicly accusing someone of subversive activities without evidence to back up the charges.”

  • Therefore, communist spies are not real in the United States

"Is it fair to say that the anxiety caused in the US due to nuclear threat, was useful and 'healthy?' (Security of the nation . . . = its health).

P1: It is fair to say anxiety due to nuclear threat is useful and healthy in the US when the government let their citizens feel secure.

P2: The Duck-and-Cover drills for children and the Defense shelters made people believe that the government has ways to protect them from massive destruction (Atomic Bomb).

  • Therefore, is it fair to say that anxiety due to nuclear threat is useful and healthy.

What arguments could be made FOR and AGAINST this statment: "America's poor, in the mid 20th century, were mostly responsible for their own problems."

FOR:

There were no suitable environment and opportunities for the elderly and disabled to work, therefore they can't help being poor.

Working Poor- Poor people worked, but wages were too low to lift them out of poverty

Poverty line was developed much later. This means that people in poverty did not recieve any care until late 1900s. Public were unaware of the situation, and no one was trying to help until they realized poverty became a massive problem.

Also, because the economy is on it's turning point and flourhing the government did not give much care to the people who are suffering from poverty.

Against:

Misfortune, when the poor move into the urban areas looking for manufacturing jobs; opportunies relocated into the suburban areas.

Large immigration; different race; therefore creates racism. Although the government encouraged people living below poverty line to move into the city but they were having difficulties adaptating to the environment and conditions. This increased poverty rate.

Q for 40.2: "How real was the threat of Communist spies within the USA?"

The threat of Communist spies within the USA was not very real because there was no solid evidence. For example, McCarthyism, it is the “practice of publicly accusing someone of subversive activities without evidence to back up the charges. As the passage mentioned, this happens often; the government (HUAC) found communist spies within the United State, but had no confirmed information about them.

On the other hand, it is quit real due to the Rosenberg Trail. Two spies for the USSR were sentenced to death. Julius Rosenberg was charged with passing atomic secrets to the Soviet. Even though there were a lot of protests, he was still executed. He became the first death of spying during Cold War.

Q for 40.3: "Is it fair to say that the anxiety caused in the US due to nuclear threat, was useful and 'healthy?' (Security of the nation . . . = its health).

It is fair to say that the anxiety caused in the US was healthy because it made people believe that their government has ways to protect them from massive destruction (Atomic Bomb). For example, the duck-and-cover drills for children and the defense shelters.

Moreover, atomic power was uprising. There were atomic-powered cars, ships, airplanes, and power plants. This provokes the economy. People were making a lot of money from this new energy or “title”.

"How does the CIA's activities in Iran show that the US behaves undemocratically in its foreign policy?"

CIA’s activities in Iran show that the United States behaves undemocratically in its foreign policy by being crafty in their operations. CIA set up propaganda campaign to control Iran’s press and public and they also sent out fear to eliminate Mohammed Mossadeq’s supporters. A democratic leader will not interfere with people’s opinion, not to mention spreading propaganda all across Iran.

Another example that shows US behave undemocratically is Roosevelt commissioned a royal decree dismissing Mossadeq and made General Zahedi the prime minister. Even though this operation did not turn out the way US wanted it because supporters for Mossadeq revolt, but it is very undemocratic for US to overthrow a country’s prime minister without the process of voting and selection.

1. "How convincing was America's attempts to influence other parts of the world to side with them in the Cold War?"

America was quit convincing by using words and persuasion as weapons to influence other parts of the world to side with them in Cold War. They created United States Information Agency (USIA) in 1953 designed propaganda and used media to spread them across different parts of the world. There are three main networks: Voice of America, Radio Free Europe, Radio Liberty. The U.S. was able to broadcast in different languages in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. It was successful because it cast fear on citizens, and people were trying to escape. The USSR had to isolate their citizens from listening to the news.

2."How wise were America's decisions to produce advanced weapons during the Cold War's first 20 years?"

The U.S. decision to produce advanced weapons was not a wise one. Since the U.S. began to produce the H-Bomb, it became a trend. After the U.S. tested its bomb in 1952, the Soviet started to create its own. The Hydrogen bombs was 500 times stronger than the atomic bombs. Moreover, the United State developed nuclear missiles submarines that can carried up to 16 nuclear missiles underwater. Not for long, the Soviet followed and created their own.

The creation of Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) made every nation in a state of anxiety. MAD meant that “either side would respond to a nuclear attack by launching its own missiles, with devastating results for both sides.” Because of the U.S. determination to keep producing stronger weapons, it puts the world in danger.
